A ceremony that is entirely yours — no institution, no script, no compromise. Just the two of you, your story, and words that actually mean something.
Book a Free ConsultationA symbolic wedding ceremony is one of the most beautiful choices a couple can make. Unlike a civil ceremony, it carries no legal requirements — which means it carries no limitations either. As your wedding celebrant, I have complete freedom to shape every word, every ritual, and every moment around you as a couple. The result is a ceremony that feels deeply personal, emotionally resonant, and absolutely unforgettable.
I'm Jan, a certified theologian, wedding officiant, and wedding planner based in Switzerland. Since 2018, I've been creating symbolic wedding ceremonies for couples from all over the world — in mountain chapels, at lake shores, in vineyards, and on alpine summits. Whether you're planning an intimate elopement in the Swiss Alps or a larger destination celebration, the ceremony I create for you will be one-of-a-kind.
"Jan told our story beautifully — with humor, emotion, and respect. The ceremony was unforgettable." — Irina & Marco
What Is a Symbolic Wedding Ceremony?
A symbolic wedding — sometimes called a free ceremony, celebrant-led ceremony, or non-denominational ceremony — is a wedding ritual that has personal and emotional significance but no legal standing. The couple typically completes the legal formalities (a brief civil registration) beforehand or at home, and then celebrates what truly matters: the ceremony itself.
This format is especially popular among international couples who want to marry in a beautiful location like Switzerland or Europe without navigating complex foreign marriage law. It's also chosen by couples who simply want more than the ten-minute civil ceremony can offer — more emotion, more storytelling, more them.
As a wedding officiant with a background in theology and over a hundred ceremonies performed, I bring both the depth and the warmth this kind of ceremony deserves. I write every ceremony from scratch, based on conversations with you, your love story, and your wishes. No templates. No filler. Just honest, beautifully crafted words.
Ceremony Styles I Offer
Non-Denominational
Spiritual in feeling, free from religious doctrine. Ideal for couples who want meaning without church affiliation.
Interfaith
Blending two cultural or religious traditions into a single, cohesive ceremony that honours both families.
Elopement Ceremony
Just the two of you, an extraordinary location, and a ceremony as intimate and adventurous as your love story.
Vow Renewal
A deeply moving recommitment ceremony — whether at a milestone anniversary or simply because you want to celebrate love again.
Elopements: Just the Two of You
An elopement is not a compromise — it's a statement. It says your love matters more than a guest list, and that the ceremony itself is the celebration. I work with couples who choose to elope for all kinds of reasons: a desire for total intimacy, the logistical freedom of a smaller occasion, or simply because standing on a mountain with the person you love is exactly enough.
Switzerland and Europe offer some of the world's most breathtaking backdrops for an elopement. As your wedding celebrant and planner, I handle everything: location scouting, permits, photographer coordination, and the ceremony itself. You just have to show up. What's included in an elopement ceremony package?
A typical elopement with me includes a personal pre-ceremony consultation, a fully written and rehearsed ceremony script, coordination with your photographer or videographer, and on-the-day presence and officiating. I can also handle logistics like location permits, transportation, and a post-ceremony dinner reservation. Why Choose a Celebrant-Led Ceremony?
When couples ask me why they should choose a symbolic ceremony over a civil one, I usually answer with a question: what do you actually want to remember? The civil registry is a bureaucratic formality — important, but not emotional. A symbolic wedding ceremony with a wedding celebrant is where the real moment lives. It's where you make your vows in your own words, where your story is told out loud, where the people you love witness something genuine.
I've performed ceremonies in four languages — German, English, French, and Italian — and for couples from over 30 countries. Whether you're planning a ceremony in Zurich, in Austria, or deep in the Alps, I bring the same level of personal attention and craftsmanship. You can read more about my background and approach on the about me page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a symbolic ceremony have legal validity?
No — a symbolic wedding ceremony has no legal standing on its own. Most couples handle the legal registration in their home country beforehand, which is typically a brief appointment at a registry office. I guide you through the best approach for your situation.
Can we write our own vows?
Absolutely. In fact, I encourage it. I can help you craft personal vows, or I'll work them into the ceremony script I write for you. Either way, what you say to each other will feel completely genuine.
How far in advance should we book?
For peak-season dates (May through September), I recommend booking 9–12 months in advance. Elopements and off-season ceremonies can sometimes be arranged with shorter notice. Reach out early to check availability.
Do you officiate ceremonies outside Switzerland?
Yes. As a wedding officiant, I travel throughout Europe. Explore destination options in Austria and across Europe.
"We wanted our ceremony to feel like us — no church, no script, just something real. Jan delivered exactly that. Every word felt personal. Our guests were in tears." — Sophie & Luca, Lake Zurich Elopement
